A river port city on the Dnipro

Kherson is not a city people from abroad have ever heard about. Nevertheless, it’s a very important one for the infrastructure of the country. Kherson is located on the south of Ukraine and is the last big city the mighty Dnipro river cross on it’s way to the Black Sea. The paradox here is this: being a river port and city of shipbuilders Kherson has all potential to be rich and successful. But this is not what you see if you come here. From the cultural centre of the South, which it was till the beginning of the XXth century, it became into industrial province during the Soviet Times. Sadly, the Mafia in the ’90s and corruption, which still flourish, bring the city back with its progress.

Weirdly abandoned look

Unfinished and half-abandoned malls, ruined building even in the central streets, walls painted by street artists, – definitely not the most charming experience. Sometimes it’s hard to believe you’re in the capital of the Oblast.

Nevertheless, you can still find some nice streets and old buildings place to place – echoes of the great past. And something important not to forget: Kherson might seem pretty grey, but actually, it’s a super-green city!

While the city itself might not impress the tourists (maybe only with the fact of it’s weirdy abandoned look), the Kherson Oblast (Region) itself has many surprises for you! P.S. The best tomatoes and watermelons are to be found here. Use your chance to try them if you are in Kherson.

If you want to learn something - you'll always find the ways.

Kherson is my hometown and it’s the place I’ve spent my childhood and teenage years. It might seem there is nothing to find here: there are no opera houses, no really fashionable locations to go to, and there is even no philharmonic house (only a burned building and a chamber orchestra left from it)! But still, I was able to grow up in an environment, full of interesting and talented people – starting from my school, music school, and college and ending with the dance club. I found people who helped me develop myself in all possible directions. I grew up absolutely inspired by high culture and with a thirst for knowledge. Probably it’s because if you want to learn something – you’ll always find the ways.
