Stanislav Canyon at the Dnipro-Bug estuary

Only 40 km away from Kherson you can find a little village named Stanislav. Being born in Kherson, I’ve never ever visited that place. Sounds weird to you? And we are back again to the statement, that human beings find something overseas much more exciting and don’t see the beauty near themselves. But here I am! Kherson Grand – Canyon, as the locals like to call it. And we are on our way to it!

in the middle of nowhere

We drive for about an hour. The weather only proves that we are in the middle of the steppe: the sun is not only shining – it’s burning. We can’t find even a cloud in the sky. Finding shades would be a challenge too. We watch in front of us: the air is vibrating. It feels like the road is so hot it’s going to melt! And there we are – in the middle of nowhere, only the little villages with a couple of families living there are coming on our way. Turning off the main road we see it: a huge Dnipro-Bug estuary, which looks like we already see the sea.

We drive along the dirt road but at some point, I have to get out of the car to watch how far can the car get and where do the cliffs start.

The view is unbelievable. This is a very unexpected landscape on the Black Sea Lowland. When you look around you might probably feel like you’re somewhere in Mediterranean Area: grass and dried flowers are covering the hot earth, Elaeagnuses are growing here and there, and of course the Sea… Marvellous!

When you stand there on the cliff – you feel how big our world is and how small we, people, are. That is a wonderful and scary feeling at the same time. I would spend the whole day standing on that point and not moving. But the sun had other plans for us. It got viler and viler. That is why we had some short picnic, got in our car and headed north. After all, we need to find the place to stay for a night, right?
